and labcoat. A large chunk of metal is embedded in one of the ceiling
lamps which lights the hallway. Sparks shower from the lamp and the hall
is filled with a greasy black smoke. A gaping hole in the east wall opens
into the fiery wreckage of what used to be a gnomish laboratory. To the
west stand a pair of huge, massive, steel doors.

The Elevator
A hollowed steel cylinder, the cabin is twenty gnomish feet in diameter.
A pair of steel doors in a semicircular wall have neither evident doorknobs
nor keyholes. Through several deteriorated metal studs in the steel
surface, tiny trails of steam emerge and hiss as they condense on the cool
steel and rush down to collect into puddles of dirty water. There are two
red buttons marked UP and DOWN, and a skull with bones crisscrossed is
engraved between them.
